Honoring Marcia Rose
Marcia Rose was born on August 26, 1957, raised and lived almost all of her life in Grayson County, Kentucky. She was the first person in her extended family to attend college, earning an associate degree in medical records technology from Western Kentucky University. She went to work at what was then Grayson County Hospital, and moved into Twin Lakes Regional Medical Center when it was created in Leitchfield, Kentucky, and was at the hospital 36 years.
After a long battle with cancer, she died November 21, 2014, at home under hospice care. She was married to Howard Shartzer. They had a daughter, Brandy, who died at birth. Marcia also helped raise three stepsons and a stepdaughter on a small farm in the general area of Grayson County High School.
Her parents, Kent and Elizabeth Renfrow Rose, and brother, Barry, have created this scholarship to honor her memory, and to help someone else realize their dream of an education.
College Heights Foundation Guidelines for the Marcia Renee Rose Scholarship Fund
- This Scholarship Fund is administered by the College Heights Foundation as an endowed account. This fund was established in memory of Marcia Renee Rose by her brother, Barry Rose, and her parents, Kent and Libby Rose.
- The principal will remain intact with only the earnings from investment used to make scholarship awards.
- The number and amount of awards will be determined based upon the development of the Fund, the rate of earnings, and other factors that affect the availability of funds.
- Recipients must be enrolled as a full-time student at Western Kentucky University.
- Recipients may be incoming freshmen or returning upperclassmen.
- First preference shall be given to residents of Grayson County. Second preference shall be given to residents of Butler County. If there are no qualified applicants from Grayson or Butler County, then applicants may be considered from any counties contiguous to Grayson or Butler.
- Recipients must be majoring in Health Information Management.
- Recipients must possess the personal qualities of character, integrity, dependability, industriousness, and human compassion which produce leaders and merit the honor of this award.
- Applicants must complete a WKU scholarship application prior to the published deadline each year. Applications must be submitted to the University Scholarship Committee in order to be considered.
- Students applying for the award may indicate on their application that they are applying for the Marcia Renee Rose Scholarship Fund.
- Recipients will be selected by the University Scholarship Committee.
- Award notification will be sent in the form of a letter from the University Scholarship Committee, with the letter to contain appropriate recognition of Marcia Renee Rose.
